APPRECIATION
I dont think i have ever felt this underappreciated. ...not to blame anyone, however, can i really blame it on myself - aside from letting it get to me? My principal has recently reminded me that i was hired as an"extra hand" to the already ESL teacher. Great expectations. With that said, everytime he comes into my room to see what i am doing/teaching, he questions it with a side of criticsm. I like being told what i can do better, and where i can improve - but, not when the person has no way of knowing what it is that i am doing (because he doesnt ask), or takes portions of what is happening and turns them into negative elements.
I am starting to become fed-up with the way our system is run...whether or not the administration and other teachers think i dont do anything, out of assumption - the one thing that has saved my confidence and grace is Teach for America. TFA consistently reminds us how important we are by sending us notes, giving us feedbac
k after watching an ENTIRE lesson, AND asking questions. Last week in the mail i received an empty photo album half-filled with quotes, and a disposable camera. The instructions were to take pictures of my students to remember my first year of impact.
..this is what i want more of...not necessarily the "presents", but the knowing that i am being appreciated. I know the kids can not say it, but i can see it everytime i walk down the hall and students who i do not teach run up to me and give me a hug, or invite me in their classroom to see their pet turtle, or the "no, i want to stay here, i dont want to go back to class" when our group time is over...
which is also why i feel it is so important to show other people how they are appreciated. especially my students for their har
d work - whether it is giving them flowers after a dance performance, or fake money when they turn in their homework. NOTHING accomplished should go unnoticed.
in many ways i do feel appreciated, but it is disgusting the way our school is run, and the way i am treated by the people who have hired me to work there.
